Small Business Owners Get Inside Look into the Banker's Mind at Hill Library
Business owners are often frustrated with their conversations with their lenders. Banker and business owner may look at the same financial information and come to different conclusions about the health and future of the business. Business owners who understand how their bankers think will have more productive conversations with their lenders. On October 31, they can get the "inside scoop" on how bankers think from an expert who has taught thousands of bankers how to do commercial lending.
Bloomington, MN, October 13, 2008 -- Having spent years traveling hundreds of thousands of miles to teach bankers all across the country how to analyze small businesses, Jeff Judy is now telling local business owners just what he has been telling bankers. His lunch-hour discussion at the James J. Hill Reference Library in downtown St. Paul, Friday, October 31, will reveal what bankers are thinking as they review the financial information of their commercial loan applicants.
"Business owners and bankers have very different perspectives on what makes a business financially strong," says Judy. "A lot of conversations about business loans are frustrating, adversarial affairs that could be conversations about finding mutual benefit."
Judy believes that there is little to be gained from "hiding" the hot buttons in the banker's world. "The first step in achieving a win-win outcome is finding common language, talking about the same things," he notes. "Having a business owner walk into a bank ready to talk about things from the banker's perspective saves everyone, banker and customer alike, a lot of time and frustration. It opens the door to exploring a mutually beneficial relationship."
Judy is in high demand for his popular seminars on commercial lending. Thousands of bankers in every state, in large national banks and small community banks, and in national and state banking associations have learned how to think about lending to small businesses from Judy's training, speaking and writing. Now business owners can hear those lessons from the source, getting key insights into the banker's mind from one of the main inputs into bankers' minds across the country.
On October 31, Judy will be the featured speaker over the noon hour at the James J. Hill Reference Library in downtown St. Paul. In the course of a presentation and Q&A session with local business owners, Judy will focus on what drives bankers' decisions about creditworthiness. "Business owners need to understand what the banker is looking for," Judy observes, "and they are looking for a lot more than just profitability."
Judy's remarks will cover key dimensions of credit decisions, explain the meaning and importance of cash flow, and introduce key leverage points for managing cash flow for better results . . . for the business, and for the credit application.
"The more you can think like a banker, the better you can work with one," Judy says. "I ought to know, because I have been telling bankers how to think for a long time."
