NEWS and EVENTS
I spend most of my time sharing information, spreading ideas for presentations, seminars, consulting work, and publications. Whether in the classroom, the boardroom, on the printed page, at the convention podium, or in electronic media, I work to bring banking institutions and their customers, especially business owners, to mutually beneficial outcomes.
This snapshot of what I'm up to will give you a better feel for how I'm working to spread better ways of doing things, leading to better outcomes for all of us.
In the Classroom/Boardroom
A few of my first quarter activities:
- Teaching for state associations in Ohio, New York, and Michigan
- Working with individual banks in Minnesota, Washington, and New York
- Leading workshops for RMA, ICBA, and ABA, and presenting at the ICBA convention
- Educating dealers for John Deere on a range of business topics
- Writing articles aimed at bankers and at business owners (see Getting The Word Out, below), in addition to Jeff's Thoughts
Look for me to be busy this summer with banking schools:
- June 13-16 will find me teaching at the ABA Stonier National Graduate School of Banking, on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
- June 17-18, I will be at the Western States School of Banking, in Albuquerque.
- July 12-16, look for me at the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado in Boulder.
- I get home to Minnesota for the ICBA Consumer Institute, August 1-4.
- The following week (August 12), I'll share my observations on Migration Analysis at the Graduate School of Banking at Wisconsin, in Madison.
- And I'll wrap up the summer, August 23-31, at the Pacific Coast Banking School in Seattle.
If you will be at any of these schools, please stop in and say, "Hi", I'd love to meet you.

Getting the Word Out
My quest to enhance both sides of the business banking relationship includes writing articles and white papers, such as:
- Sharing ideas on how to "Respond to Risk in the Next Decade" in a Vantage Point column published in the May, 2010 issue of Independent Banker (Page 42)
- Following up my seminars for John Deere Landscapes with an article for their dealers and business customers on "Starting Financing Discussions on the Right Foot".
- Contributed the article "Inside the Mind of Your Banker" to Florida-based A Business Affair magazine, giving business owners some tips about working with their bankers.
- Working with journalists to help them understand what has been happening with Minnesota banks, and how a banking crisis could occur in our state. My comments have appeared in several articles in a series by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune on the fortunes of some of the banks in our state, and on the reasons they have gotten into trouble.
- Writing a "Top Lending Practices" article for Independent Banker on how to use your credit policy as the strategic plan for your credit business. You can download the article as it appeared in the July, 2009 issue, here.
- Bringing attention to an issue I call "Financial Literacy For Businesses". See my recent press release for more information.
- Starting my third year of publishing my electronic newsletter, Jeff's Thoughts. See my archive to browse more than 50 past articles on banking topics.
- Developing my white paper on how to "Use Your Credit Policy To Drive Your Credit Business", helping bank management see what distinguishes effective credit policies that contribute to their business from those that drain resources and lead to problems. Learn more at my "Policy And Process" page.
