NEWS and EVENTS
I spend most of my time sharing information, spreading ideas for presentations, seminars, consulting work, and publications. Whether in the classroom, the boardroom, on the printed page, at the convention podium, or in electronic media, I work to bring banking institutions and their customers, especially business owners, to mutually beneficial outcomes.
This snapshot of what I'm up to will give you a better feel for how I'm working to spread better ways of doing things, leading to better outcomes for all of us.
In the Classroom/Boardroom
The last few months have found me:
- Delivering training for associations in Washington, New York, and Ohio, as well as for the ABA and the ICBA. In between association appearances, I developed and delivered curriculum for individual banks in New York, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
- Writing articles for ICBA, PCBS, and for state associations from Ohio to Alabama to Indiana.
- Expanding my team of associates with the addition of Nan Gesche Larsen [link: to help me serve my clients' culture-building needs.
- Developing new materials to respond to clients' needs in the area of effective risk rating approaches, portfolio analysis, and ALLL/Capital Adequacy.
The next few months will find me:
- On the road training for banking schools such as SouthWestern Graduate School of Banking in Dallas, ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking in Philadelphia, Western States School of Banking in New Mexico, ICBA Consumer Institute in Minnesota, the Graduate School of Banking - Wisconsin and the Pacific Coast Banking School in Seattle.
- I'll also be working with individual banks from Wisconsin to Washington state, as well as state associations.
Getting the Word Out
My quest to enhance both sides of the business banking relationship includes writing articles and white papers, such as:
- Writing a regular column for the new ICBA Bank Directors' newsletter. Recent topics have included "Of Leaders and Followers" (Board roles and responsibilities) and "Are You Earning a Return on Your Risk Rating System?"
- Sharing my thoughts about risk rating approaches for the magazine of the Ohio Bankers League, and about credit policy for the Indiana Bankers magazine and for the Community Bankers Association of Alabama.
- Contributing an article on risk management to the new PCBS web section providing exclusive resources to PCBS alumni.
- Sharing ideas on how to "Respond to Risk in the Next Decade" in a Vantage Point column published in the May, 2010 issue of Independent Banker (Page 42)
- Following up my seminars for John Deere Landscapes with an article for their dealers and business customers on "Starting Financing Discussions on the Right Foot".
- Contributed the article "Inside the Mind of Your Banker" to Florida-based A Business Affair magazine, giving business owners some tips about working with their bankers.
- Working with journalists to help them understand what has been happening with Minnesota banks, and how a banking crisis could occur in our state. My comments have appeared in several articles in a series by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune on the fortunes of some of the banks in our state, and on the reasons they have gotten into trouble.
- Writing a "Top Lending Practices" article for Independent Banker on how to use your credit policy as the strategic plan for your credit business. You can download the article as it appeared in the July, 2009 issue, here.
